How to Dye your hair
This section explains how to colour your hair using Manic Panic’s range of semi-permanent hair dyes in order to get a vibrant and long-lasting result.
Before you start
- Be aware that colouring results will depend on the Manic Panic Hair Color used, and the existing colour and health of your hair. For the most dramatic results your hair needs to be porous, bleached or tinted.
- We advise doing a strand test to check whether the product will give you the result you’re after.
- Be careful when dyeing, as Manic Panic Hair Color may temporarily stain skin and permanently mark fabric, upholstery, and the like.
- Manic Panic Hair Colors should be used as it’s provided, other products such as peroxide and permanent hair dye shouldn’t be added to it.
- Don’t use alkaline products with Manic Panic Hair Color as this will change the acid balance of the product, which is designed to allow optimal absorption of the hair by the dye. This means we recommend the use of low pH and alcohol free setting and blow-dry lotions.
Patch Test
Before dyeing your hair, an initial patch test should be carried out on your skin. Follow the instructions below.
- Choose an inconspicuous area, such as behind the ear or the inside fold of the elbow, about 2.5 cm in diameter or, a bit larger than the size of an Australian ten cent piece.
- Clean this chosen patch with water and a mild soap, and dry with a clean towel.
- Paint a thin film of your chosen Manic Panic Hair Color on the still clean and dry patch of skin.
- Leave area to dry, ensuring it is left uncovered and untouched for 24 hours.
- Take a good look at the area. If you can see that any irritation has occurred then do not use the dye under any circumstances.
Now you’re ready to colour you hair.
Pre-Lighten Hair
To get the most vibrant hair colour that looks as it does on the packaging, rather than a strong highlight, you will need to lighten your hair using a product like the Manic Panic Flash Lightning Complete Bleach Kit. This is especially important if you want a lighter colour or pastel shade on your hair.
Follow the advice that comes with the bleaching kit, making sure you get all the bleach out of your hair, as any bleach residue left when you colour can interfere with the function of Manic Panic Hair Color.
Clean
Shampoo your hair well with a pH-balanced shampoo, making sure to rinse thoroughly to get rid of all soap residue. Then towel dry your hair, leaving it damp for the next stage.
Prepare
Apply petroleum jelly or baby oil on the hair line and ears to avoid getting dye on the skin. Use plastic or rubber gloves when applying the colour.
Applying Colour
- Put dye into a plastic bowl using ½ a jar for short hair or a whole jar for long hair.
- Begin applying the colour using a tint brush a little over 1 centimetre from the scalp and apply evenly and thoroughly through to the hair ends.
- Then begin at the nape of the neck colouring upwards through the body of the hair, making sure each hair shaft is really well coated with colour.
- Keep combing colour through until the colour becomes frothy, which shows the colour has been all soaked up.
- If you’re using a lighter shade of Manic Panic Hair Color, further working through may be needed to ensure a thorough penetration and a more lasting result.
Wait
Leave colour on for at least 15 minutes. Manic Panic Hair Color should be completely processed in 15 minutes at normal room temperature. For colour resistant hair, we recommend that you use a plastic cap over your hair for at least 30 minutes.
An infra-red heat lamp can shorten the processing time to 5 – 7 minutes and may provide a more intense and durable colour penetration.
Rinse
Keeping the rinse water out of your face, rinse hair really well.
Maintaining your new Manic Panic Hair Color
- Rinsing your hair with vinegar straight after colouring can help to make Manic Panic Hair Color last longer as it increases the pH level of the hair. To do this, combine equal parts white vinegar with water, comb through hair and leave for 1- 2 minutes then rinse well. Otherwise, no after-colouring hair treatments are needed with Manic Panic Hair Color.
- Manic Panic is made from natural and fortifying ingredients, no animal by-products, and doesn’t contain any dangerous chemicals that will hurt your hair. This means shampooing and exposure to other substances such as from swimming or styling products will start to reduce the colour.
Removal options
- Alkaline shampoos will accelerate colour fading.
- Get the hair professionally coloured over with a darker, more natural shade of Manic Panic Hair Color.
- A shop-bought hot oil treatment may also assist in getting the colour out more quickly. Follow the instructions on the packaging carefully. To remove the oil along with some colour, initially apply shampoo without water. Steadily add water while shampooing until all the oil is gone.
- Another option is to seek the advice from manufacturers of hair lightening and hair colour removal products before trying these, or speak to a professional hairdresser.
- If you’re looking for a great hair colour without the commitment, why not try Manic Panic’s Dyehard Hair Color, which shampoos out easily?
Warnings
- Avoid getting the product in your eye. If eye contact occurs, rinse eye area with warm water straight away and seek medical advice.
- Manic Panic Hair Colors are not for internal use; keep out of reach of children.
